Production Elements

As the computer hardware exceeds the minimum requirements, response, redraw, and rendering speed will improve significantly.
Minimum System Requirements. (Note: Running OMEGA™ software on minimum system requirements will be very slow)

  • IBM-PC compatible computer with a Pentium™ 90 MHz processor and 32 MB RAM (all OMEGA™ variants).
  • Hard disk requirements to install and run OMEGA™ and its associated Gerber Soft Fonts (outline fonts).
The OMEGA™ requirements below are in addition to the Windows recommendation that at least 10% of the total hard disk space be kept free. Additional hard disk space is needed to load options such as ART Path™, ImageRIP™, and Gerber ColorID™ options. More free space allows you to work with larger image files and gives more room to keep previous jobs around for immediate use. Regular disk backup is highly recommended.

  • OMEGA™ CP : 750 MB = 500 MB (plus 250 MB free space for image processing) URW TrueType™: (Small Text) fonts require slightly over 156MB of additional disk space if they are all stored on the hard drive in addition to the Gerber Soft Fonts provided with OMEGA™ CP. Storing only those used by OMEGA™ on the hard drive will reduce this requirement. Note that Windows will slow down significantly with more than 250 TrueType fonts installed. OMEGA™ will slow down significantly with more than 500 Gerber Soft Fonts installed.
  • OMEGA™ CS & OMEGA™ CL : 260MB = 160 MB plus 100 MB free space for image processing

  • CD-ROM Drive
  • 3.5" floppy disk drive
  • 2 Parallel ports (LPT/printer type ports; 25-pin, female connector) for use with paper printers and the GERBER EDGE®; additional serial & parallel ports can be added with the Gerber serial Parallel Board Option P53107D. The GERBER EDGE® 2 requires an ECP parallel port; Gerber offers one we know to be reliable as part number P71851C
  • An Ethernet IEEE 802.3 LAN card (operating at 10 megabits per second) if you are interfacing to the GERBER MAXX®
  • 2 Serial ports (9-pin, male connector). An available serial port is required occasionally to connect the MonacoSENSOR™ colorimeter when color-calibrating a monitor. This may be accomplished by temporarily disconnecting another serial device during the calibration
  • SVGA monitor (800x600 or higher resolution with more than 256 colors)
  • Microsoft PS/2-style bus mouse (not a serial mouse. A bus mouse does not use a serial port, leaving that port available for a plotter)
  • Microsoft Windows 95, Windows 98 or Windows NT Workstation 4.0 with service pack 5
  • A USB port and a USB-compatible Operating System is required only if a USB security block option is requested
